Anthony Wilson

Poetry in the primary school:
a lesson plan,
continued

As I hope these poems show, the main thing is to keep reminding the children to be as precise as they can at every turn.  Here are some poems by a range of young writers.

The Magic Box

I will put in my box
The sound of the sea rolling,
The taste of chopped pear,
A cheetah zooming,
Some silver lumps,
And feeling sad.

Kate Welton, Year 1, Rattlesden Primary School, Suffolk

The Whacky Box

I will put in the box
the bang of a drum
a red bus whizzing past with squeaky wheels
the crashing of lightning
the smell of curry
the bumping of a blackboard
an aeroplane that walks
the lid is made out of bubblegum
the hinges are made out of human eyeballs
I will keep it up a gumtree

Richard Jenkinson, Year 3, The Butts Primary, School,Hampshire

The Cool Box

I will put in my box
the voices of everybody,
taps from my tap shoes,
the thumping and vibrating music of a stereo.

I will put in my box
all the boys in the world,
a dolphin eating chocolate and drinking coke,
the coldness of the Atlantic ocean.

I will in the my box
the make-up of all pop stars,
all the fruit-smelling hair accessories,
the glittery and flying clothes.

The box is covered in hearts
and spirals, there's a strong, hard lock made of
playdough!

I will swim in my box in the corners
of darkness, then shoot to the sky like a
bullet shot out

of

a

gun.

Kayleigh Hart, Year 6, Redhills Combined School, Exeter
