Activities Graveney encourages creative writing and last year we were awarded a grant to host our own writer in residence, the poet Valerie Bloom by the Poetry Society under the Poetry Places scheme. This year we are planning to run workshops which link poetry with modern dance. We run two regular creative writing workshops one of which is for our sixth form students. The students have really benefited from entering North London University's Creative writing competitions and the competition has become a focus for us during the school year. Our students have been encouraged by each others' successes over the years and have also benefited from pre-competition workshops organised by the university both at the university and last year on the school's site, when we were visited by the poet Patricia Scanlan. Patricia's visit made an enormous impact on the creative energy and output of the students and she was both sensitive and encouraging with individuals. Finally our students also benefit from competing against and sometimes in succeeding over more privileged pupils from public schools. Their successes have an impact not just on those who win or who are short listed but also on the morale and confidence of their fellow students. Successful students are also able to cite their selection when competing with public school students for university places. I hope the competition continues to run and to serve as a beacon for creative talent. - Helen Gray, English Teacher You can visit the school's website at http://www.graveney.wandsworth.sch.uk The Poetry Society will be collecting School Poetry Profiles to post on the Education pages of its website.
