what makes poetry reading interesting to an audience TIME: 70 min RESOURCES REQUIRED: Five short poems for students to read, one slightly longer for me to read. LESSON
OUTLINE Register. Whole class: Any readers chosen last session? Individually: Start lesson with free writing, using starter sentences. Whole class / individual: Talk about their free writing as a source of ideas. Choose one line from any of their writing so far. Use this as the first line of a new poem. Whole class: I read a poem to the class in a monotonal voice. Ask the students what they thought of my reading. Start to discuss what makes poetry reading interesting to an audience. Write a list of guidelines on the board - they write these in their poetry jotters on the back page. Whole class: Put poem on the board. Go through as a class, discussing where it should be read slowly or quickly, and what tone of voice should be used. Underline 'fast' sections in red and 'slow' sections in green. Whole class: Ask if any student wants to read out a line or whole poem from any of their writing so far. Ask them to bear in mind the guidelines. FURTHER ACTION: Homework set; work incomplete; pupils needing support; alterations to forward plans Return to Exeter Model Sequence of Lessons |
